[NSFW] Bubbles - Untold Magazine

We may be locked down for the third time in twelve months and I haven’t picked up my camera in almost a month now, but there is still some catching up to be done as there are a few shots I haven’t had the chance to share yet.

Back in February, I got a call from my friend Amber who was looking to expand on her OnlyFans content and we hashed out a few ideas. One of them was to shoot in a bathtub full of bubbles and and the idea was born! We were joined by #DreamTeam makeup artist, Bryana and my good friend Paul came along to assist and we ended up creating a pretty amazing set of images. So much so that we submitted them to several magazines and we were eventually published in 2 awesome magazines. Dominante, a French based men’s glamour magazine, and a wonderful new high end magazine, Untold, where we managed to grace the back cover!! This was a wonderful surprise and are thrilled to have been selected for this honor and to be included with some incredible talent from around the world. πŸ˜€

We can’t wait for this lockdown to end so we can get out again to start creating some gorgeous new images!

[NSFW] Gabrielle in TSYM Magazine

While we remain under a province wide lock down and many small businesses like ours are shuttered as well for public safety, there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

This week, vaccines were released to anyone in NS over 40 years old, case counts are slowly falling and we are hopeful that the current restrictions are loosened so we can visit our new camper in time for the Victoria Day long weekend this month. So yes, it’s a tough time right now, but things are looking up. πŸ™‚

Sunday Morning Sunshine - Edith Glamour with Amanda

With this publication, we top over 50 print publications over the last 4 years in a wealth of magazines from around the world. The latest is also one of our latest sessions and one of the quickest publication turnarounds we’ve seen, barely 4 weeks! Thanks to Edith Glamour for accepting this set with the incredibly talented Amanda and assisted by my good friend and fellow photographer Paul Girvan. This edition provided us with 10 gorgeous pages in the magazine feature plus the back cover!

This is the fourth time we have used this boutique hotel in Halifax’s north end for client sessions and we absolutely love the light in this particular suite! Unfortunately, this time around, the striking, high contrast light you see in the title page only lasted about 5 minutes and with the clouds, never came back all weekend as the sky clouded over and was grey for the rest of the weekend. No, don’t get me wrong, cloudy skies make for fantastic diffused light, which always looks amazing, but the high contrast early morning light is magical. πŸ™‚

Also, when you have a wonderful model like Amanda, it’s difficult to not take amazing photos and this set looks to be one of our most popular for publication to date, with 3 sets approved so far!

You can preview and purchase your own copy here:

Kansha Magazine Cover with Katia (NSFW)

Kansha 32 - Web Banner-1

It’s been 2 years this month since we left our studio space downtown. We do miss it. Just not the lack of parking or loading zones. πŸ˜‰

But we especially miss days like this when we had the incomparable Katia join us for a marathon afternoon shoot that has now resulted in at least three separate publications, including the latest – and my personal favorite! –  which landed us on the cover of this month’s Kansha Magazine!

Katia is always a pleasure to photograph. From our very first test shoot to our most recent beach shoot – that’s coming up in a new publication early next month, so wait until you see that one! – every session has resulted in spectacular images and yet another publication.

In this case, since we were leaving our home of many years and looking at exploring new options for a studio, we decided to explore some lesser used spaces around the building that housed the studio. After all, it was Sunday and no one else was in the building. πŸ˜‰

We started on the main stair case on our way to some of the storage areas upstairs and decided to go for a little voyeuristic feel by shooting from through the railing upstairs while looking down as Katia relaxing on the stairs below. The result is the image you will find on the cover of Kansha Magazine.

We also took advantage of the empty and dimly lit storage areas for the rest of the set, which you can check out right here. Hope you like this new set!

And, here are a few bonus images from the shoot that didn’t make the magazine but were still some personal favorites. Enjoy!

Hotel Boudoir with Jennifer

I’ve shot with beautiful Jenny Mel a couple of times over the last year or so after meeting her at a fitness competition in Halifax early in 2018. We’ve also been fortunate enough to have every one of our shoots published somewhere, which is a rarity, to say the least. You can see the results of our very first session here Portfolio Building with Jenny Mel

I was in Moncton for a work trip a while ago and had some free time so I reached out to Jenny and my friend James to assist. We took over a suite at the Crowne Plaza in Downtown Moncton and the plan was set!

The resulting set was published in Boudoir Inspiration magazine and was one of my favorite portfolio sessions in recent memory.

I hope you enjoy the set.

Black Tape Project - Round 3 / No8 Magazine

No8 Opening Spread

After shooting a couple of studio based Black Tape Project sessions over the last 2 years, I chatted with my “Dream Team” make up artist Bryana Doyscher and we both wanted to expand outside of the studio and the limitations of shooting on seamless paper so we decided since it was summer there was nothing to stop us from moving to a nearby beach and shooting in my usual bikini style to switch the focus from the tape itself to the “wardrobe” design and the glamour and beauty of the female form together with the natural shapes of the sand and the color and warmth of the sun.

Seems pretty simple, right?

Logistically, “Black Tape” is fairly labour intensive and takes a lot more time to prepare for a shoot than just hair and makeup, sometime hours for just a single look. We’ve gotten much more efficient at the task, or maybe I should say Bryana has gotten quite efficient at creating the design and applying the tape and cut vinyl.

Although the first two sessions featured mostly actual black electrical tape, for this installment and since we were expecting to have some fantastic golden hour sunlight, we decided we wanted to use something with more color and that could catch some of the golden hour light, so we went with a common craft brand of sheet vinyl with a holographic finish and toned in the orange and pink spectrum and all I can say is WOW! What a fantastic choice it turned out to be.

I had met our model, Teresa, about a year previous and we shot a boudoir session as a Valentines gift and she enjoyed the experience tremendously, so we talked about then about other chances to shoot together and she told me she would be thrilled to join me for this series. Now, Teresa is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet and as a Masters Bikini Fitness competitor, which means she is over 40 by the way, at the pro level – in fact, she will be representing Canada in Ibiza Spain this fall at the world level of competition, so she is just about the perfect model to be a part of this series. Everything about her screams confidence, strength and feminism.

So we scheduled a date, picked up the appropriate vinyl and put the team together. Of course, Bryana too care of makeup and tape design / application and Paul Girvan, my friend and fellow photographer (who happened to introduce me to Teresa in the first place) joined us to assist and we headed out to Crystal Crescent Beach near Halifax and had a complete blast creating this set of images.

We’ve been sitting on them for a little while now and my friends at No8 Magazine reached out a little while ago looking for some of my work for an upcoming swimwear issue and it was the perfect time to share the series with the world. To that end, this is the first of three posts that will cover this particular publication because not only did Teresa’s Black Tape set get published, but two other sets were included as well and Teresa made it to the back cover of the magazine! Yay!

So, check out the gallery below and if you like the set, please support the magazine and purchase a print copy here – No8 Magazine in Print

Enjoy and watch for the next installment, coming later this week. πŸ™‚

Portfolio Building with Jenny Mel

I met Jennifer over a year ago now at a fitness competition in Halifax and when we chatted about possibly shooting something, she was quite excited and had never really thought about modeling. She had competed several times in bikini figure competitions and has placed in her category (5′ 9″ and taller) but had never actually had a professional photo shoot before. So, we made plans to show a few weeks later when I would be in her hometown of Moncton, NB for the Atlantic Nationals competition.

My good friend Paul Girvan does most of the pro-fitness competition photography in Atlantic Canada and for the last year, I’ve worked with Paul doing image logistics work behind the scenes at his shows. This trip, Paul rented a local studio in Moncton and was gracious enough to let me borrow the space while he was getting the MU done for his first studio client of the day. Fortunately, Jennifer is a morning person, so we were able to get into the studio around 8AM, no mean feat since none of us went to bed before 1AM or so! The iconic Vicki Martin, who is probably the best fitness competition MUA in the industry, joined us for Jennifer’s MU and helped keep my wife company at the studio while my assistant and very old friend James Vaughan and I decided to take Jennifer for a walk around downtown Moncton looking for interesting photo locations.

We didn’t have to walk far to find this alley just off of Main St in the downtown core and I’ll let the photo gallery speak for itself.

Images from this shoot have now been published in both Boudoir Inspiration Magazine and DEZIRE Magazine early in 2019 and we recently shot with Jennifer again during a trip to Moncton and can’t wait to share the results of that set too!

#BlackTapeProject comes to Halifax

(From the Black Tape Project Facebook page,

"The final product is an art form that fans & critics have credited as 'electrifying' and 'truly unique'. Miami artist, Joel Alvarez, is the originator of The Black Tape Project. Embodying the character of Miami’s nightlife culture, The Black Tape Project incorporates one of the most common household items, coalesced with Joel’s artistic flare and the natural beauty of the human body.

A major milestone was when the Black Tape Project found its way to the cover of FHM magazine creating a design for celebrity model, Vida Guerra, shot by Michael Vincent in Los Angeles in 2011. Since then, The Black Tape Project has contributed to collaborations with Michael Bay, Rick Ross, Omarion, Carl Cox, Steve Aoki and numerous private events at well-known Miami clubs. Since its inception, The Black Tape project has traveled far beyond South Beach reaching cities such as Las Vegas, New York City, the Caribbean and several countries in Europe."

And now, it’s landed in Halifax. πŸ™‚

The BTP Halifax Team (L to R: Vicki Martin, Katia Calligari, Mike McCarthy)

I became involved in a conversation between one of my favorite new models, Katia Calligari, and one of the top makeup artists in Halifax, Vicki Martin, during an industry networking event back in December. Katia and I had already planned to shoot together in the new year and take advantage of her make up skills – she’s a licensed make up artist as well as a fitness competitor and model – when Vicki talked about planning to try the Black Tape and putting together a team to make it happen. I’ve been following the Black Tape Project for a few years and was fascinated by the style, look and uniqueness of each look and have been wanting to try it for some time and had never quite been able to put the perfect team together to make it happen. Funny how this brief conversation as a Christmas networking function suddenly flicked the switch and kick started this project with this amazing team!

MUA/Artist Vicki Martin applies the electrical tape to our patient model, Katia.

Aligning our schedules over the next month was a challenge and at times I thought aligning the planets might be easier, but we managed to select a date in mid-January and started planning the logistics.

Electrical tape was easy as I work for an electrical distributor for my day job, so I stocked up on a few rolls.

The morning of the shoot, we almost had to cancel when Vicki came down with a bug and was under the weather, but she was a trooper and pushed through the task of spending 5+ hours cutting and applying nearly 6 full rolls of electrical tape.

Working with the tape was a learning experience in itself. We wasted nearly an hour applying tape to a sheet of wax paper thinking that the tape might be easily shaped and cut without sticking permanently to the paper. It actually worked great, until it sat for more than 5 minutes. Then the tape bonded to the wax paper and was impossible to remove, so back to the drawing board…

Finally, we just settled on cutting strips of tape, placing the strip and then using tiny fingernail scissors to trim the ends and complete the patterns. It took a lot of time, but the final results turned out to be fantastic. Vicki is an amazing makeup artist and as it turns out a very creative tape artist as well!

As it turns out, fantastic enough to get an 8 page feature spread in RHK Magazine, based out of the US. Check out the April 1st, 2018 edition here. You can purchase a digital online copy for only $6.99. Just be aware that the content at the link should be considered NSFW and is of an adult nature.

We had such a great time putting this project together. I hope you enjoy the images and I look forward to continuing this series in the future.

So, F*ck Glitter. Got Tape? πŸ˜‰
