If you’ve been following us for any time at all, you already know that one of my favorite things is photographing the nude at various waterfalls around Nova Scotia. We have soooo many waterfalls to explore and so little time…

This year, I managed to work with a couple of our favorite models from the past as well as some brand new faces that we hope to have back again too. With racing, client work and trying to find time to spend with my family at our seasonal camping space, there were very few opportunities for us to add any new sets to this passion project.

One of the first waterfall sets of the season was with a brand new model who only recently relocated to Halifax from out west and she responded to a casting call I posted on my FB page, so we sat and chatted over coffee about what is involved with shooting this series, which can be very challenging physically for the models. It’s cold, even on a 30 Deg C day, the flowing water is still frigid! It’s nude, and if a model hasn’t done nudes or isn’t 100% comfortable, it needs to be discussed up front exactly what’s expected. Our waterfall series includes what are called “art nudes”  which tend to be rather demure and anonymous compared to boudoir or glamour nudes, so it’s not quite the same, especially since there is no “sexy” aspect to the posing or images. Suffice it to say, the entire feel of the images and the technicallity of the shoot is far different.

For example, during a boudoir session, we rarely spend more than a few seconds setting up a pose. For the most part, we want our clients to be relaxed and natural. Sure, we help and guide, but we try to keep it light and fun. With a fine art session, the posing is *critical* to the story of the images, so we might spend half an hour tweaking and perfecting a pose. Now imagine doing all that and quite literally freezing your butt off at the same time. Not for the faint of heart for sure! 🙂

So Makenzie was up for the challenge so we picked a Sunday morning, I invited my favorite assistant, Chandrae Bailey, and Makenzie brought along her boyfriend to help us carry things into the falls and to stay close with a blanket and water shoes to help keep Makenzie warm between shots and hit the road to Fire Brook Falls.

Fire Brook Falls is relatively easy to access but still a hidden gem and once we arrived, we spent a little over an hour and a half braving the falls and the images just kept on coming. Chandrae even captured a rare behind the scenes image of me showing Makenzie a rough approximation of what I had in mind for the pose for a particular shot. LOL!

Makenzie was amazing. For a first time fine art nude model, she was more than amazing. The images are some of my favorites in this series to date and I am so happy we had the opportunity to shoot this series together. I have no doubt we will shoot again soon.

Enjoy!
